Intra-Africa Academic mobility Project: - Collaborative training in fisheries and aquaculture in East, Central and Southern Africa (COTRA)

The EU under its Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme, has provided funding to support training of graduate students in African universities. In this mobility programme five African partner institutions and one EU Technical partner will collaborate in the training of professionals to achieve sustainable fisheries management and aquaculture resources that shall lead to increased fish production and enhanced food and nutritional security, and hence, improved livelihood and household revenue.

24 Masters (6 credit seeking, 18 degree-seeking) and 12 Doctorates (4 credit seeking, 8 degree-seeking)] will be trained in the thematic areas of Fisheries Management, Aquaculture, Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Ichthyology, Zoology and Biology-: Hydrobiology. In addition, 10 administrative staff will participate in a capacity building program mainly in areas of financial and international student management among others. Mobility partners will either act as sending and/or hosting institutions. The project will provide fellowships for full degree programs (PhDs and MSc) as well as short term mobility for students and staff and will run from 1st November 2017 until 31st October 2022.

The project is expected to contribute to

  1. Improved skills and competences of academic staff in research, training and supervision,
  2. Enhanced quality of graduate training that will lead to innovative and fit-for-purpose professionals in fisheries and aquaculture,
  3. Improved skills and competences of administrative staff in implementing international mobility. Subsequently, a procedure/platform to support the harmonisation and internationalisation of fisheries and aquaculture programmes among African Universities shall be achieved.
Objectives

Achieve sustainable fisheries management and aquaculture resources leading to increased fish production and enhanced food and nutritional security, and hence, improved livelihood through.

Specific objectives
  • Improved skills and competences of academic staffs in research, training and supervision,
  • Administrative staffs in implementing international mobility,
  • Enhanced quality of graduate training leading to innovative and fit-for-purpose professionals.
Expected results
  • Support short and long-term mobility programs in fisheries and aquaculture training and research in African Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and assures well-established quality mechanisms to increase the visibility and recognition of fisheries and aquaculture programmes among African HEIs and
  • Ensure unified training procedures and high-quality graduates who will subsequently support the sustainability of the mobility and dissemination practices.
