Mzuzu University is a public institution of Higher learning and research constituted by the Act of Parliament, Number 12 of 1997. The Mzuzu University has students’ population of over 5,000 doing Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees. Its mission is to provide high quality education, training, research and complimentary services to meet the technological, social and economic needs of individuals and communities in Malawi and the world. Mzuzu University is supported through government subvention, students’ fees, research grants and other donations. Mzuzu University has six faculties that include: Faculty of Education; Faculty of Environmental Sciences; Faculty of Health Sciences; Faculty of Tourism, Hospitality and Management; Faculty of Science, Technology and Innovation and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Mzuzu University has three established centers that support teaching, learning and research, these are: Centre for Open and Distance Learning; Centre for Water and Sanitation and Centre for Energy Training and Testing Centre.

Faculty of Environmental Sciences
Faculty of Environmental Science is mandated to provide high quality education, training, research and complimentary services through six departments that include: Agrisciences; Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences; Forestry and Environmental Management; Built Environment; Water Resource Management & Development; and Geosciences. The faculty offers the following academic programs: Fisheries and Aquatic Science (at Certificate, BSc, MSc and PhD levels); Forestry and Environmental management (Certificate, BSc, MSc and PhD); Urban and Regional Planning (BSc, MSc and PhD); Water Resources Management and Sanitation (Certificate, BSc, MSc and PhD); MSc –Geoinformatics (GIS) (BSc, MSc and PhD); and Transformative Community Development (Certificate, BSc, MSc and PhD).
Programmes
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Science offers Master of Science Degree in Fisheries and Aquatic Science. The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Science was the first in the Faculty of Environmental Science to mount a Master of Science Degree programme. The research agenda for the Department focuses on the following key areas: Fish processing, product development, value addition and quality management; aquatic ecosystem management and climate change; fish feed development; fisheries and aquaculture economics; fisheries stock assessment and management and aquaculture production technologies.
